Thousands of kids of all ages along with their families and NASCAR enthusiasts celebrated reaching the finish line on Sunday, May 23, with Taylor Gibbs, the five-year-old son of JD and Melissa Gibbs who recently completed cancer treatment at Levine Children’s Hospital (LCH).
Taylor’s Finish Line Festival was filled with hundreds of activities for the entire family to enjoy including carnival rides, inflatables, assorted entertainers, and hot air balloon rides. The event also attracted an outpouring of support from various NASCAR drivers as fans enjoyed the opportunity to shoot hoops with Denny Hamlin and race Go Karts with Kasey Kahne. Grammy award winning artist, Toby Mac, ended the night with a crowd pleasing hip-hop concert followed by a giant fireworks display.
Designated proceeds from the event will go to the Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Fund, which provides funding for the introduction of Phase I and Phase II clinical trials at LCH. This will allow kids in our community access to the most recent drug trials and latest cancer treatments while being close to home.
Taylor was diagnosed with leukemia in 2007 at the age of two and is currently in remission. The Gibbs family plays an instrumental role in the Charlotte community and takes great pride in giving back. “We hope you can help us wrap up our experience, tie a pretty bow on it, and offer it back as a gift to the community we have grown to love.”
