Over 200 community members including families, physicians and local businesses joined the Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation in the fight against pediatric cancer on March 27 at Adam’s 5K Race to Chomp Childhood Cancer.
Saturday’s event began with a special balloon release in memory of all those who have passed away from cancer followed by a 3.1 mile course along the McAlpine Creek Greenway. The event was held in honor of six-year-old cancer survivor Adam Tanksley who was diagnosed two years ago with Stage IV Wilm’s Tumor – a rare form of kidney cancer. Adam and his supporters enjoyed a morning filled with music, food and activities for all.
As one of the initial members of the Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition at Levine Children’s Hospital, the Foundation raises money to help provide local access to high level clinical trials and cancer related studies by the Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Center at Levine Children’s Hospital. This marks a significant step in bringing new research to Charlotte, which means children can receive the care they need – right here in our community, rather than traveling out of state.
The Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation established solely to make a difference in the lives of children and their families affected by pediatric cancer. By raising funds and bringing awareness through fun and uplifting events, the Foundation is committed to helping find a cure for pediatric cancer.
The Carolinas Kids Cancer Research Coalition consists of eight of the region’s most dedicated nonprofit organizations committed to supporting pediatric cancer research and services at Levine Children’s Hospital. The Coalition’s initial endowment commitment of $5.7 million to Levine Children’s Hospital will support the development of Phase I and Phase II clinical trials. Through fundraising, education, and awareness, the Coalition is dedicated to ensuring children throughout the region receive the latest cancer treatments, close to home. Founding Coalition members include The Leon Levine Foundation, The Alex Hemby Foundation, The Adam Faulk Tanksley Foundation, The Baby J Ladley Fund, the Quail Hollow Championship, Brett’s Ride for Rhabdo, drumSTRONG™, and 24 Hours of Booty.
